Biotechnology

Faculty involved in research in biotechnology use molecular methods for genetic improvement of crop plants and to learn about their basic biological processes. A major focus is the identification and use of DNA markers to assist breeding efforts and enhance genetic analysis of important traits (e.g. disease resistance or nutritional quality). These efforts include novel genetic mapping approaches, like the use of haploid cultures to rapidly generate mapping populations. Another focus is the identification and testing of genes that can be used as transgenes to improve specific traits in crop plants or simply to determine the function of genes for research purposes.
